Too much exposure to the sun is one of the main reasons people get (strong)skin cancer(/strong), in fact, more than 90% of all skin cancers are found on parts of the body that typically get the most sun exposure like the face, neck, ears, hands, and arms.

Overexposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays (UV rays) is what causes skin cancer and can be prevented by simply applying the correct amount of sunscreen when you know you will be around sun exposure. Just as dangerous as the sun are UV rays from artificial sources like tanning beds or sunlamps.

The three main types of skin cancer are basal cell cancer, squamous cell cancer, and melanoma. In the Skin Cancer Section of this website, we talk a bit about the ABCDE system as a guide to detecting signs of skin cancer in moles or growths on the skin.

People with skin types that burn easily, and do not tan are at the highest risk for skin cancers, and, anyone who has had severe sunburns, or many sunburns is at high risk for skin cancers.

Sun Damage
The sunlight that reaches the earth has ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B (UVA and UVB) rays. These sun UV rays are the main cause of damage to the skin. UVA and UVB rays affect the skin’s sensitivity to sun exposure in different ways.

UVA:

  • Can pass through window glass
  • Is not affected by a change in altitude or weather
  • Is present all day and every day of the year
  • Penetrates deep into skin layers
  • Is 20 times more abundant than UVB rays
  • Causes long-term skin damage.

UVB:

  • Cannot pass through window glass
  • Causes sunburn
  • Causes tanning
  • Helps the body get vitamin D
  • It is more intense during the middle of the day and in the summer.
  • At high altitudes and near the equator,
  • It can cause skin cancer and cataracts.
  • Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of over 15. Sunscreens that say “broad-spectrum” can protect the skin from UVA and UVB rays.
