What is Eczema?

Eczema is a skin condition caused by inflammation of the skin. Typically, eczema causes the skin to become itchy, red, and dry — even cracked and leathery. Eczema can appear on any part of the body.

For most people who deal with eczema, it is a chronic problem, and most infants that have eczema outgrow it before adulthood. People with eczema have a higher risk of developing allergic conditions like asthma or hay fever. Of the many types of eczema, the most common is Atopic Dermatitis.

What Causes Eczema?

Eczema is a hereditary condition and runs in many families. Some genes may cause some people to have extra-sensitive skin, another cause may be an overactive immune system. It is thought that skin defects contribute to eczema by allowing moisture out through the skin germs in.

What Causes Eczema?

Eczema is a hereditary condition and runs in many families. Some genes may cause some people to have extra-sensitive skin, another cause may be an overactive immune system.

It is thought that skin defects contribute to eczema by allowing moisture out through the skin germs in.

Some factors that may trigger eczema include:

  • Stress
  • Contact with irritating substances
  • Heat and sweat
  • Cold, dry climates
  • Dry skin

During a flare-up of eczema, you are at risk of exposure to anyone with a viral skin disease, such as cold sores or genital herpes. You develop numerous painful, small, fluid-filled blisters in the areas of eczema, this may be an indication that you have eczema herpeticum, a rare but potentially severe complication caused by the herpes simplex virus.

What Are the Symptoms of Eczema?

In eczema, your skin will almost always itch before a rash appears. Typically, eczema shows itself as:

  • Patches of chronically itchy, dry, thickened skin, usually on the hands, neck, face, and legs in children, the inner creases of the knees and elbows may often be involved.
  • If scratched, dry patches of skin and open sores with crusts may develop and may get infected.
  • Call Advanced Dermatology & Skin Cancer Specialists About Your Eczema If:
  • You develop an itchy rash and have a family history of eczema or asthma.
  • If you use an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream, the inflammation doesn’t respond within a week.
  • You develop yellowish to light brown crust or pus-filled blisters over existing eczema patches, which may indicate a bacterial infection.
