On the human body, Hair grows everywhere but on the palms of our hands and the soles of our feet. Many hairs are so fine they’re virtually invisible.
Hair is made up of a protein called keratin that is produced in hair follicles in the outer layer of the skin. When follicles produce new hair cells, old cells are pushed out through the surface of the skin.
About 90% of the hair on a person’s scalp grows most of the time during life. Age, disease, and a variety of factors influence the life cycle of each follicle.
Anagen — active hair growth that lasts between two to six years
Catagen — transitional hair growth that lasts two to three weeks
Telogen — the resting phase, which lasts about 2 to 3 months & as the resting phase finishes, the hair is shed and is replaced with new hair & the growing cycle starts again.
and
As we age, the rate of hair growth slows down.
Involutional Alopecia: a natural condition where the hair thins gradually with age. In this type of alopecia, an increased number of hair follicles go into the resting phase. The remaining hairs become shorter and fewer in number.
Androgenic Alopecia: a genetic condition that affects both men and women.
In men, this condition, often called male-pattern baldness, can begin as early as their teens or twenties. A receding hairline and a gradual loss of hair from the crown and frontal scalp characterize it.
In women, this condition, often called female-pattern baldness, causes noticeable hair thinning until their 40s or later. Typically, women experience a general thinning over their entire scalp, usually the most extensive hair loss is at the crown.
Alopecia Areata: often starts suddenly and may cause patchy hair loss in children and young adults. This condition may result in complete baldness (alopecia totalis). Thankfully, for about 90% of people with this condition, the hair could return within a few years.
Alopecia Universalis: causes all body hair to fall out, including the eyebrows, eyelashes, and pubic hair.
Trichotillomania, seen most frequently in children, is a psychological disorder in which a person pulls out their own hair.
Telogen effluvium is a temporary hair thinning over the scalp that happens when changes in the growth cycle of hair occur. Many hairs enter the resting phase at the same time, causing hair shedding and thinning.
