What Is Hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis is a common disorder where the person who has this condition sweats excessively. About 2-3% of people suffer from excessive sweating of the underarms (axillary hyperhidrosis) or the palms and soles of the feet (palmoplantar hyperhidrosis). Excessive sweating of the palm and sole sweating often begins around adolescence, the age of 13 (on average), while underarm sweating tends to start in late adolescence. Sweating may be embarrassing because it may stain clothes, ruin romantic situations, and complicate business and social interactions.

 What Causes Hyperhidrosis?
Most of the time, excessive sweating can occur in people who are otherwise healthy, although sometimes neurological, endocrine, infectious, and other systemic diseases can cause hyperhidrosis. Heat and emotions may trigger hyperhidrosis in some, but many who suffer from hyperhidrosis sweat all their waking hours, regardless of their mood or the weather.

What is the Treatment for Hyperhidrosis?

To properly evaluate & treat Hyperhidrosis, a systematic evaluation of causes and triggers must be determined. Once the cause or causes are identified, a treatment plan can be implemented that, for many people, results in an improved quality of life.

The approach to treating excessive sweating proceeds as follows:

  • Over-the-counter antiperspirants containing a low dose of metal salt (usually aluminum) are typically tried first since they are readily available
  • Prescription-strength antiperspirants, which contain aluminum chloride hexahydrate.
  • Iontophoresis is a device that passes ionized tap water through the skin using direct electricity.
  • Oral medications and Anticholinergics reduce sweating.
  • Botox-A has been approved in the U.S. by the FDA for treating excessive axillary (underarm) sweating.
  • Surgery. A procedure called thoracic sympathectomy may be considered a last resort.
  • Aluminum Chloride Hexahydrate and Excessive Sweating.

In summary, Hyperhidrosis is a common disorder that when handled correctly can be treated. Do not suffer from this condition, call and let’s develop a plan to fix your excessive sweating issues.
