What is Urticaria?
Urticaria is hives. If you have ever had hives, you know that they are uncomfortable, unsightly, and sometimes painful. Urticaria is the outbreak of swollen, pale red bumps on the skin that appear suddenly and are usually a result of the body’s reaction to certain allergens, or for unknown reasons.

Hives can appear anywhere on the body, including the face, lips, tongue, ears, and arms, and usually cause itching, and may also burn or sting. Hives vary in size, from a small area the size of a nickel to sometimes they may grow to areas as large as a plate or larger. They can last for hours, or up to one day before fading.

What Causes Hives and What is Angioedema Hives?
When you think of hives, you think about bumps on the surface of your skin. In cases where someone has Angioedema Hives, swelling occurs under the skin instead of on the surface. This type of hive is characterized by deep swelling around the eyes and lips and sometimes of the genitals, hands, and feet and lasts longer than hives, but the swelling usually goes away in less than 24 hours. In rare cases, angioedema hives may be more serious and life-threatening because they may be in the throat, tongue, or lungs and may block the airways, causing difficulty breathing.

Allergic Hives and Angioedema Hives happen when blood plasma leaks out of small blood vessels in the skin, usually in response to histamine which is a chemical released from specialized cells along the skin’s blood vessels.

Allergic reactions can happen for many reasons, including such things as chemicals in certain foods, sunlight exposure, medications, or insect stings.

There are several different types of hives, including:

  • Acute Urticaria – These types of hives last less than six weeks and are usually caused by certain foods, medications, infections, insect bites and internal diseases. The most common foods that cause hives are nuts, chocolate, fish, tomatoes, eggs, fresh berries, and milk. Fresh foods cause hives more often than cooked foods and certain food additives and preservatives may also be to blame.
  • Chronic Urticaria and Angioedema – The cause of this type of hive is usually more difficult to identify and tends to last more than six weeks. In some cases, though, the cause may be thyroid disease, hepatitis, infection, or cancer. This type of hives may affect other internal organs like the lungs, muscles, and gastrointestinal tract system and symptoms may include muscle soreness, shortness of breath, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  • Physical Urticaria – These hives are caused by direct physical stimulation of the skin such as cold, heat, sun exposure, vibration, pressure, sweating, and exercise. These hives typically happen right where the skin was stimulated and tend to appear within one hour after exposure.
  • Dermatographism – This is a common form of physical urticaria where hives form after firmly stroking or scratching the skin. These hives can also occur along with other forms of urticaria.
